Frequently Asked Questions
  1. Why should my company voluntarily contribute to these private colleges?
    • Because they enroll 25% of the undergraduate students in the state, yet they award 36% of all 4-year degrees in Missouri - and they do this without reliance on federal or state tax support for administrative operations.  Without these independent colleges, the state would have to pay over $225 million to subsidize the public higher education of these students.
  2. How are contributions to the Fund used?
    • All unrestricted support the member colleges receive from the Fund are used for need-based financial aid for qualified students unless otherwise directed by the donor.
  3. How are the contributions to the Fund distributed to the member colleges?
    • Undesignated contributions are distributed equally to the member colleges.  The Fund does accept gifts designated for one or more member schools and it distributes them twice a year in accordance with the donor's wishes.
  4. What kind of activities does the Fund raise money to support?
    • All support to the Foundation, unless otherwise stipulated by the donor, goes to support need-based student financial aid.  The Fund does not get involved in capital or endowment campaigns for the member schools.
  5. Which schools can be member of the Fund?
    • The member schools are independent baccalaureate degree-granting liberal arts and comprehensive colleges and universities in the State of Missouri, accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, and their income is derived primarily from private sources.
  6. Are there Colleges Funds in other states?
    • Yes, there are state and regional colleges funds/associates that work with schools in Illinois, Iowa, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, etc. and we all belong to the national organization, the Foundation for Independent Higher Education in Chicago.
  7. Can I apply to the Fund for a scholarship?
    • No, recipients of these scholarships are selected by the member colleges not the Fund because they have the capability to determine need and can direct these scholarships to best fit the needs of the students who apply to enroll in their classes.
